LovePeopleSports Report:The UConn Effect

uconn huskies logo

By:Silverio Ford

Athletics is a major part of a college or university it gives the student body a sense of pride and spirit. The University of Connecticut is a well known learning institution because of their Women’s basketball program. Luigi Auriemma better known as Geno began his stellar coaching career at UConn in the summer of 1985,at this point Storrs was not a well known collegiate location in any regard.Little Geno from Norristown,Pennsylvania took over a lowly women’s basketball program in Storrs with minimalist facilities and resources and turned it into a Women’s Basketball powerhouse with 8 NCAA National Championships. UConn and Tennessee both have the same amount of national championships but this will not last for long especially if class of 2014 recruit Aja Wilson 6-foot-5 from Columbia,South Carolina and Asia Durr a 5-foot-10 class of 2015 guard out of the Atlanta,Georgia area both commit to UConn.

The Lady Huskies have a good chance to win at least four more NCAA National Titles in the near future with the talent in place plus some prospective recruits. Is this good for NCAA women’s basketball? Are there any other programs who could win a National Title? Is dominance or parity better for NCAA women’s basketball?

The Tennessee Lady Vols was UConn’s only real adversary in women’s basketball. The Tennessee faithful are some of the most dedicated and proud fans.Pat Summit is still a pioneer and the matriarch of women’s basketball however, the Lady Vols program is not at the same echelon as it used to be.Pop culture and social media have taken the lead and programs like Notre Dame and Louisville have risen in popularity with young ladies. Then other prospective recruits go for the quality education of say a Duke or Stanford. Many student-athletes and their parents choose Duke for the name and a career after basketball not for the coaching. The exact antithesis occurs when recruits decide to attend The University of South Carolina.Prospects usually head down to Columbia to play for legendary head coach Dawn Staley.

Regional recruiting has also been on the rise as coaching staffs have made it their business to lock-up top tier local talent. At programs like Cal every player on the roster is a California native.Baylor’s roster is full of players from the deep south, the player from the northern most city on their roster is Atlanta,Georgia.North Carolina’s roster does not have a player on their roster north of the Mason Dixon line with North Carolina being the northern most native state of any player on the North Carolina roster.

The state of New York has been good to the UConn women’s basketball program with players such as Tina Charles,Breanna Stewart and most recently Soniya Chong a 5-foot-9 guard from the Westchester County section of New York that was an under the radar prospect until her senior year.Chong was easily a top 20 caliber recruit in a feeble 2013 class.

With the top front-court in the nation in place:Stephanie Dolson 6-5 SR;Morgan Tuck 6-2 Soph;Breanna Stewart 6-4 Soph;Kiah Stokes 6-3 JR.UConns guard play will be imperative this season because the Lady Huskies will be tested early:vs Stanford;at Maryland;at Penn State;at Duke and at Baylor.

Recruiting Rundown:
It seems as how Aja Wilson 6-5 2014-SC is down to UConn and South Carolina.Bianca Cuevas 5-7 2014-NY is being heavily recruited however, Ole Miss and South Carolina seem to be ahead of the pack at this point.

The 2015 recruiting class should be interesting as the top prospects in the class are guards and or wing-players.The 2015 class has very little post prospects.Every outfit and grassroots brass have Asia Durr 5-10-GA No.1 and Katie Lou Samuelson 6-3-CA No.2.

Napheesa Collier a 6-foot-2 prospect out of Missouri has risen to the top of the 2015 class and rightfully so after a tremendous summer she was a dominant performer for the Missouri Phenoms travel club.Collier is being recruited by UConn and will be playing a loaded high school schedule with Incarnate Word Academy-MO.

howard university
Howard Universities women’s basketball coaching staff need to create a stronger presence on the recruiting trails in order to get commitments from significant prospects.Howard is the Center of black-american academia and Washington,DC is the superb locale to attract exemplary student-athletes to build a solid and competitive women’s basketball program in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and beyond.

anna wilson
Anna Wilson 5-foot-7 Soph VA seems to be near the top of everyone’s 2016 class list.So is Stephanie Jones 6-2 2016 Aberdeen-MD.

Jasmine Jones
Jasmine Jones 6′ Soph FL is ranked in the top 25 in every outfits rankings. This distinction indicates a solid top 25 caliber prospect.

Sydney Zambrotta 5-7 Soph NY is ranked by Prospects Nation as the 24th best prospect in the 2016 class.Fellow New Yorker Dominique Toussaint a 5-foot-9 Soph is the 15th ranked Prospect in the Prospect Nations 2016 class rankings.
