Maddie Plank is a young lady that has emerged as a top level basketball prospect at Briarcliff High School. Plank is an elite level point-guard with a great feel for the game and excellent court vision. With enviable size at 5-foot-11, the Briarcliff Manor N.Y. native is elusive off the dribble and instinctive with the ball in her hands being able to facilitate shots for her teammates or, to create for herself as a polished shot-maker with finesse. Plank is a south-paw player but her ambidextrous approach and skill-set allows her to create separation off the dribble at a high rate. “Growing up, I played baseball, lacrosse, soccer, and basketball year round. So playing sports was always a large part of my life. I have 3 brothers and we are all super competitive and that made me work really hard in every sport I was pursuing. My high school coach , Don Hamlin was the one who introduced me to basketball and taught me the basics. He has been my coach since 3rd grade and has been there for me through everything. Finally, my dad played a role in making me the player I am today. He always said that you could never know how tall you are going to be so having ball handling skills is necessary. I have been dribbling ever since.”
Plank enjoys studying subjects like chemistry and pre-calculus, and has made significant progress as a student with a 4.0 grade-point-average at the academically rigorous and competitive Briarcliff High School which is ranked as the 28th best public high school in New York State by U.S. News & World Reports. The schools’ AP (Advanced Placement) programs prepare students to transition to high level collegiate academics. “Our school is super rigorous and competitive, the pressures in school has made me an extremely well-rounded and focused student. Every minute is important when you have to study for a very difficult test and still have time for practice.” Planks’ very high academic prowess coupled with her elite level of play on the court makes her one of the most heavily recruited prospects in the class of 2019. Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, Big East, Big 12, Pac 10, Ivy and Patriot league schools have all offered her scholarships. She is excited to start her junior season and enjoys being coached by Don Hamlin. Hamlin is a class personified coach and educator with a history of excellence in Westchester County.
“For the upcoming high school season our goal is to win a state championship. We are a year older, a year stronger, and a year tougher. Our starting line-up has been working all off season to improve and be a huge threat this season. I would like to be the best leader for our young team. Also, I would love to average a triple-double and given our fast pace, I think it is possible. As for AAU, of course we want to be the best team in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League. Our team is really athletic and even though I don’t know them really well yet, I think we will have great chemistry. Personally, I want to improve and grow as a player while playing on the circuit. I am trying to become the best player I can be and strive to be one of the best guards in the EYBL.” Maddie Plank is a focused, dedicated and mature student-athlete with an incredibly bright future. Look for her and Briarcliff High School girls basketball team to have a great 2017-18 season.
