Saylor Poffenbarger is not your ordinary high school freshman at Middletown High School, Md.  She is an elite level guard prospect in the graduating class of 2021, and a starter on the MHS varsity basketball team. At 6-foot-1, her combination of size, and a polished skill-set  makes her a top tier collegiate recruit. Poffenbarger, showed what she can do in her first high school game pouring in 20 points while pulling down 14 rebounds in a contested 64-57 win over Frederick High School, Md., with the likes of the University of Maryland Women’s Basketball head coach Brenda Frese on hand as a spectator in from College Park, Md. “I am never satisfied with being average, I work very hard in the classroom and on the basketball court.” “Rebounding is not a technique, its all heart, its who’s going to go up and get it.” Said the standout freshman, who is the daughter of Amy Poffenbarger, who was a star basketball player at the University of Missouri that once recorded a triple-double in a game. Nevertheless, Saylor understands at a young age that nothing will be handed to her. It will take hard work, focus and dedication to be the best player she can be. “I’m expected to score, I’m expected to play defense, I’m expected to create energy.”

Poffenbarger, is blessed to have her mother coaching her in high school and coach Larry Gary on the travel club circuit with the Germantown Lady Panthers program. . “Saylor has the size, length, athleticism and skill set to do it all. She is a high major, BCS level recruit, a five tool player as they say in baseball” said Larry Gary. “I have many influences in my life, my mom started me young. I always attended her practices and she would constantly have the ball in my hands. Also, coach Engle who suddenly passed away in 2016 was an influence on my life in general. He always was willing to workout and full of advice about life on and off the court. Most recently I have been coached by Larry Gray who has taken my game to the next level.” While still early in her development as a prospect, she is a fluid shooter with solid form and follow through. Her athleticism and motor enables her to be a strong rebounder and defender. “I am an accurate shooter from the outside, I am also able to get past my defender and finish at the rim.” “My goals for the upcoming season are to create a strong team attitude, win our conference and then win the state championship. My personal goals are to be the best teammate I can be and be nominated for player of the year.” Saylor Poffenbarger and the Middletown H.S. Knights Girls Basketball team is off to a great start, look for them to have a special 2017-18 season under the tutelage of coach Amy Poffenbarger.
